Abbie Hoffman, 43, on the run from police for 6^ years, surrended Thursday. He faces charges of jumping bail and dealing with drugs that could carry a life sentence. Kays Gary in the Charlotte Observer had an article in last Thursday’s paper about how nice singer Perry Como is in person and that he is building a home near Saluda. In Friday’s paper he told more about the house and quoted Tryon architect Holland Brady. Paul Reneau of Landrum is the builder. Mrs. J. W. Taylor of Tryon died Friday morning at St. Luke’s Hospital. For 31 years she was manger of the Tryon School cafeteria. She called all the children by name, knew what they would eat (and what they wouldn’t) and was a “mother hen” to them. She did lots of “extra” things for people and always did more than her part in any community or church activity. Tonight the Tryon Town Council meets at 7:30; the Tryon School Board meets at 7:30 and the Polk County School Board meets at7:30. Adult Education District One Schools Adult Education Program will hold its registration tonight from 7 to 10 o’clock at the Campobello- Gramling School. The program is open to anyone in the District One area who has not completed requirments for a State High School Diploma. Classes will be held at the Campobello-Gramling School each Monday and Tuesday nights from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. beginning tonight. Ken Tucker Going To Korea Ken Tucker of Tryon is one of five young business and professional men from this area who was selected to visit Korea. They are members of a Rotary Group Study Exchange team which left on Sunday, September 7 and will be in Korea until October 16. Tucker is with the North Carolina National Bank, and is also Mayor of Tryon. Group Study Exchange is an activity of the Rotary Foundation which provides travel grants for the exchange teams, within a two-year period, between paired Rotary districts in different countries. The Foundation, which is spending U. S. $100 million on its educational program during, 1980-85, promotes international understanding and good will. The other four members of the team are Donald Hughston of Charlotte, Bobby Morehead of Shelby, Luther Smith of Horseshoe, and Douglas Jeffries of Hendersonville. The visit will provide the team a unique person-to-person opportunity to promote better understanding and friendly relations between the people of USA and Korea. While in Korea, the team members will live in the homes of their Rotarian hosts. They will study economic, social, educational, industrial and cultural characteristics of that nation through travel and discussions within the participating Rotary district.
